REPORT FOR FEBRUARY, 2005

Hello Local members. Just a some notes to keep you informed of the events that have taken place in the past 6 weeks. You may know we have had a drastic change in leadership tied to the surplus. The good news is the local did not fail and is running at full strength. We have received many grievances . As you may know we represent a wide variety of jobs and entertain 13 contracts. It has been challenging but not impossible.

LNO:

There have been two leadership meetings with LNO and the union. The meetings are to address the main concerns of the employees. For example, our capped days, the trouble that we’ve had with the RAS. The good news about that is they are willing to negotiate a policy and not force us into something that was not negotiated by our local. The company also agrees and wants to work on any issue we may bring to the table. Peggy Wescomb has taken a new position and will not be in charge of the RAS.

There was also an officers’ meeting in Santa Fe. At this meeting we discussed  bills that are trying to be passed. We must flex our muscles and stand together. We have to become involved. Now is the time to voice your opinion. Express your opinion and take back our power. Some issues that were brought up was an explanation of Workers Compensation and how this works. Also Principle Financial had a presentation. They respresent other CWA locals and we will be setting up a presentation to help those who would have questions with their 401K or their options for retirement.

Agent Services:

I went to a celebration at Agent Services and met Kevin Grewe who is director of Agent Services. The Local’s goal is to keep jobs in New Mexico.

Print Shop:

We have had a lot of grievances that were left unattended that we have addressed along with new grievances. Everything has been filed and currently we are waiting on responses from Paul Kirchoffer and Chris Brown. I have already met with with Sarah Nichols, Paul Kirchoffer, Chris Brown and also labor relations  Brian Seboe (second step). They also have been very willing to work with the concerns of the union and to resolve the issues that were left unattended.

UNM:

Learning the public sector of the Local’s contracts has been difficult and since Cathy Otero resigning as VP for UNM at the end of February we have been working on clearing those grievances. Their grievance process is  a lot different from Qwest’s but not impossible.

UNMH:

We have had grievances and have been very successful. I have met with Barbra Ohm, CEO and have also been very successful ins setting up our intentions.

L3/Vertex:

Although rocky at the start with grievances having been sent to the wrong second step by the previous administration, we are happy to inform you that everyone has been notified or n grievances and oth the company and the union agreed to work together to reintroduce these issues at the second step thanks to Doug Gibson’s (Steward, Area Rep and employee of Vertex) hard work.

This year (2005) Most of you will be negotiating a new contract.  Therefore most of you will be electing a new bargaining committee and you will receive forms for suggested contract changes.  For more information contact your respective VP or the union hall at 266-5876.
